MARANGU ROUTE
MACHAME ROUTE
Affectionately known as the ‘Coca Cola route’, Marangu
route is the most popular route to the summit of Mt.
Kilimanjaro. This could be as a result that it’s
possible to reach the top in 5 days. It’s the only route
that offers hut accommodation along the entire route.
Mineral water, soft drinks, chocolates and beer are sold
at the camp on this route. The youngest person to scale
the mountain was aged eleven, the oldest seventy four.

at Kilimanjaro International Airport at Arusha, then
drive to Springland Hotel in Moshi.
Overnight at Springland Hotel – Moshi.
DAY 2 – MARANGU GATE (1980M) TO MANDARAHUT (2700M) –
HIKING TIME: 5 HRS, DISTANCE: ABOUT 12 KMS,
The
journey from Moshi to Kilimanjaro Nat. Park takes about
an hour. The journey passes through the village of Marangu, which is located on the lower slopes of the
mountain. After signing in at the gate, you ascend on a
cleared ridge trail through the rain forest. Your first
stop will be at Mandara Hut, a group of wooden gate and
huts in the forest clearing.
DAY 3 – MANDARA HUT (2700M) TO HOROMBO HUT (3720M) –
HIKING TIME: 6 HRS, DISTANCE: APPROX 15 KMS.
From
Mandara hut the trail passes through a short stretch of
forest then skirts the base of the Maundi Crater and
emerges into the transition from the rain forest of
moor land. Horombo hut is a village of wooden huts on a
small plateau. You will meet both ascending and
descending hikers here. Remember to drink enough water
and move in a comfortable pace.
DAY 4 – HOROMBO HUT (3720M) TO KIBO HUT (4700M) – HIKING
TIME: 6 HRS, DISTANCE: APPROX 15 KMS)
After
breakfast you will continue to the Alpine desert
habitat. The lower route passes the last watering point
at 4130m. You will have to fill up your water bottles
and flasks with as much water as needed until you return
to Horombo Hut. However, mineral water can be bought at
Kibo hut. The summit is now a further 1165 m up and you
will reach the top the same night. Prepare you
equipment, ski stick, thermal clothing and replace
camera/headlamp batteries for your summit bid. To
prevent water from freezing it will be wise to carry it
in a thermal flask. Go to bed at around 1900hrs and try
to get as much rest as possible.
DAY 5 – HOROMBO HUT – ACCLIMATIZATION DAY.
Whole
day at Horombo hut for acclimatization.
DAY 6 – KIBO HUT (4700M) TO UHURU PEAK (5895M) TO
HOROMBO HUT (3720M) – HIKING TIME: 8 HRS TO UHURU AND 6
HRS TO HOROMBO, DISTANCE: 6 KMS ASCENT AND 21 KMS
DESCEND.
You
will rise around 23:30hrs and after tea & biscuits, you
continue into the night, this is where the going gets
really tough. The first section of the trail consists of
rocky path to the Hans Meyer cave (5150m), also a good
resting point. The path then zigzags up to Gillman’s
Point (5861m),which is located on the crater rim. From
Gillman’s point you will normally encounter snow all the
way up to Uhuru peak, the highest point in Africa. YOU
MADE IT. Weather conditions on the summit will determine
how long you will be able to spend taking photographs,
before the 3 hour descent back to Kibo hut. After a
short rest you gather all the gear you had left behind
for the ascent and head down to Horombo hut for your
overnight. The return will seem surprisingly fast
compared to the ascent. The total time spend walking on
this day is 14 hours so be prepared for a tough day.
Later in the evening, enjoy your last dinner on the
mountain and a well earned sleep filled with happy
memories.
DAY 7 – HOROMBO HUT (3720M) TO MARANGU GATE (1980M) –
HIKING TIME: 6 HOURS, DISTANCE: 27 KMS.
After
breakfast, continue with your descent, passing the
Mandara hut down to the Marangu gate. At Marangu gate,
sign your name and details. Successful climbers will
receive their summit certificates. Climbers who will
have reached Gillman’s Point will receive Green
certificates, while those who reached Uhuru Peak are
issued with God certificates. Drive back to Arusha and
depart as per your flight details.
